Short answer: TiviMate isn’t made for Samsung (Tizen) or LG (webOS) TVs. Your best options are a free player that takes an Xtream Codes login, such as IPTV Smarters from WHMCS Smarters, or a paid activation player such as IBO Player, which gives a trial and then charges a one-time fee per TV. If your TV’s store carries neither, a plug-in streaming stick is the simpler fix.
Which IPTV player apps work on Samsung and LG TVs?
Two kinds of player work on these TVs. Free login apps let you type an Xtream Codes login straight on the TV. Paid activation apps show a MAC address and a device key on screen, and you add your playlist on the app’s website from your phone. TiviMate and XCIPTV are Android apps, so neither one installs on Tizen or webOS.
| App or type | Kind | Samsung (Tizen) | LG (webOS) | How you add your service | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| IPTV Smarters (developer: WHMCS Smarters) | Free login app | Listed in Samsung’s TV app store | Listed in some regions and on some models | Type the Xtream Codes login on the TV | Free |
| IBO Player | Activation app | Often listed; search your store | Often listed; search your store | MAC address and device key on iboplayer.com, then add your playlist there | Free trial, then a one-time fee per TV, paid on the official site |
| Other MAC activation players | Activation app | Many lookalikes come and go | Same | Same website method | Each charges its own fee per TV |
| Older playlist players (Smart IPTV, SS IPTV and similar) | Paste an M3U link | Several have left the store over the years | Varies | Upload or paste a link on the app’s site | Varies |
| TiviMate, XCIPTV | Android TV apps | No | No | Not possible on the TV itself | Use a stick instead |
Samsung’s own app catalogue page for IPTV Smarters lists WHMCS Smarters as the developer and describes Xtream Codes login, a TV guide and catch-up. Use that developer name as your check when you search on the TV, because several apps in both stores use “Smarters” in their names.
Store listings change by country, by model year and sometimes by month. Treat the table as a list of what to search for, not a promise that every Canadian Samsung or LG shows every app. Our smart TV setup guide keeps the current method for Samsung, LG and Hisense VIDAA in one place.
How do you check what your TV can install?
Look up your model and software version first. The store only shows apps that support your TV’s software, and older processors decide how fast a big channel list scrolls.
On a Samsung TV
- Open Settings. Press the Home button and select Settings. On 2022 and newer models, choose All Settings.
- Go to Support > About This TV. Note the model code and the software version. The model code is also on a sticker on the back of the TV.
- Update the software. Support > Software Update > Update Now. Apps often refuse to install on old firmware.
On an LG TV
- Open All Settings. Press the Settings button (the gear) and choose All Settings.
- Find About This TV. It’s under General on older webOS versions and under Support on newer ones. Note the webOS TV version.
- Check for updates. On the same screen, turn on automatic updates or select Check for Updates.
| What you find | What to expect | What we’d do |
|---|---|---|
| A recent Samsung or LG, roughly the last five or six model years | Most current player apps install and run well | Install the free login app first |
| A TV from the late 2010s | Fewer apps, older versions, slower menus with large channel lists | Try the free app; if scrolling lags, use a stick |
| A TV older than that | The store may not list IPTV players at all | Plug in a stick and skip the TV’s apps |
| A TV on Wi-Fi in a corner far from the router | Freezing that has nothing to do with the app | Run an Ethernet cable or move a mesh pod closer |
The year ranges are rough guides, not hard rules. A store search on your own TV is the only test that counts. If you can’t read the model code, the support sites for Samsung Canada and LG Canada explain where to find it and list the software updates for each model.
How do you install and log in to a player on a Samsung TV?
Search the app in Samsung’s Apps screen, check the developer name, install it and type your Xtream Codes login. Here’s the full sequence with IPTV Smarters as the example.
- Open Apps. Press Home and select Apps in the Smart Hub row. Some models ask you to sign in to a Samsung account before they let you install anything.
- Search. Select the magnifying glass at the top right and type the app name with the on-screen keyboard.
- Check the developer. Open the listing and read the developer line. For IPTV Smarters it should say WHMCS Smarters.
- Install and open. Select Install. When it finishes, select Open. Choose Add to Home if you want it in the bottom row.
- Choose the Xtream login. In IPTV Smarters the option reads “Login with Xtream Codes API”.
- Fill in four fields. Any Name (for example “Living room”), Username, Password and URL. The URL is the server address from your login email, including
http://and the port number. - Select Add User. The app downloads live channels, movies, series and the guide. Give it a minute on a full-channels playlist.
- Test a 24-hour channel. Open Live TV and play CP24, CBC News Network or CTV News Channel. News channels are always live, so if they play, your login works.
How do you install a player on an LG TV?
The store steps are the same as on Samsung. What’s different with activation apps such as IBO Player is that you set up the playlist on a website, not on the TV. This sequence covers both kinds.
- Open Apps. Press Home and open Apps. On older webOS versions it’s called LG Content Store.
- Search and check the developer. Use the magnifying glass, type the app name, and open the listing before you install.
- Install and launch. Select Install, then Launch.
- For a login app, type the Xtream Codes login exactly as on Samsung above, and you’re done.
- For an activation app, look at the start screen. It shows a MAC address and a device key. Take a photo with your phone.
- Open the app’s official website on your phone. For IBO Player that’s iboplayer.com. Choose the option to manage your device or playlists, and enter the MAC address and device key.
- Add the playlist. Give it a name, paste the link or login details you received, and save.
- Restart the app on the TV. Close it and open it again. The playlist appears in the list.
Our IBO Player setup guide goes through activation, playlist and the settings that matter on that app in more detail.
Free login app or paid activation app: which should you pick?
Start with the free login app. Move to a paid activation app only if the free one is missing something you’d use every week, or runs badly on your model.
| Free login app (IPTV Smarters type) | Paid activation app (IBO Player type) | |
|---|---|---|
| Upfront cost | Free | Trial, then a one-time fee per TV |
| Where you set it up | On the TV, with the remote | On a website, from your phone |
| Typing long addresses | TV keyboard, or a phone remote app | Phone keyboard, which is easier |
| Second TV in the house | Install again, still free | Pay again for that TV |
| Changing your login later | Add a new user in the app | Edit the playlist on the website |
| When the trial clock starts | No trial | From the first launch, so install only when your login is ready |
The player doesn’t change the channels you get. The same login shows the same channels, movies and guide in any of these apps. What changes is the layout, how quickly the guide scrolls, how catch-up is presented and how many clicks it takes to reach TSN 4 on a Tuesday night. For a deeper look at what paying actually buys, read free vs paid IPTV players. For the free app’s full menus, see our IPTV Smarters Pro setup guide.

Which Samsung and LG settings make IPTV look and sound better?
Turn motion smoothing down for live TV, pick a natural picture mode, and match the audio output to what’s plugged in. The paths below are the usual ones; names shift a little between model years.
| Setting | Samsung | LG | Suggested for IPTV |
|---|---|---|---|
| Picture mode | Settings > Picture > Picture Mode | Settings > Picture > Picture Mode (Select Mode) | Movie or Filmmaker Mode for films; Standard for daytime sports in a bright room |
| Motion smoothing | Picture > Expert Settings > Auto Motion Plus (Picture Clarity on newer models) | Picture > Advanced Settings > Clarity > TruMotion | Off for news and films; a low custom level for hockey if fast pans look choppy |
| Audio output format | Sound > Expert Settings > Digital Output Audio Format | Sound > Advanced Settings > Digital Sound Output | Auto or Pass-Through with a soundbar that decodes Dolby; PCM if a channel plays silent |
| DNS | General (or Connection) > Network > Network Status > IP Settings | General > Network > your connection > Edit or Advanced settings | Leave on automatic unless you’re fixing a specific problem |
| Fast start | Not usually needed | Quick Start+ (search Settings for it) | Turn it off if apps misbehave after the TV wakes; the TV then starts fresh each time |
Motion smoothing deserves a closer look. It invents frames between real ones, which makes films look like daytime soap operas and can add small hiccups when a stream’s frame rate changes, for example when you go from a Canadian channel at about 60 fields a second to a UK channel at 50. On sports it can help, so set it low rather than high, and judge it on a real game rather than the menu preview.
Audio format matters because many IPTV movies and some sports feeds carry Dolby audio. If your soundbar decodes it, pass it through. If you hear nothing on certain channels or films, switch to PCM so the TV converts the sound itself, then test the same channel again.
Why does an IPTV app freeze on the TV when the same channel works on a phone?
Because the TV is the weak link. Smart TVs usually have slower processors and weaker Wi-Fi than a recent phone or streaming stick, and the TV’s antenna sits behind a metal panel, often against a wall. When the TV app freezes and your phone on the same Wi-Fi doesn’t, work through these in order.
- Do a cold restart. On a Samsung, hold the Power button on the remote until the TV turns off and back on, about 5 seconds. On an LG, unplug it for a full minute, or turn off Quick Start+ so a normal power-off clears memory.
- Clear the app’s cache on Samsung. On most models from 2020 on, go to Settings > Support > Device Care > Manage Storage, pick the app, select View Details, then Clear Cache.
- Reinstall on LG. LG has no per-app cache button. Delete the app and install it again. Activation apps keep your playlist on their website; login apps need the login typed again.
- Plug in Ethernet. Many TVs have a 100 Mbps Ethernet port. That’s four times what a 4K stream needs, and it ends Wi-Fi drops.
- Drop from 4K to HD. 4K needs 25 Mbps per stream. On a 10 Mbps rural line, stick to the HD version of the channel.
- Close other apps. TVs keep apps in memory in the background. Fewer open apps means more room for the player.
- Check the player’s decoder options. Some TV players offer a choice of video decoder. Our guide to hardware vs software decoding explains which to pick.
What does a Samsung or LG TV need from your internet connection?
The same speed per stream as any other device: 3 Mbps for SD, 5 Mbps for 720p, 10 Mbps for Full HD and 25 Mbps for 4K. The difference is that a TV’s Wi-Fi is usually weaker than a phone’s, so a speed test on your phone in the kitchen tells you little about the TV in the basement.
| What you watch | Speed per stream | Data per hour (approx.) | Comfortable line with the rest of the house online |
|---|---|---|---|
| CP24 or CBC News Network in HD | 5 Mbps | 1.5 to 2 GB | 6.5 Mbps or more |
| A Full HD game on TSN 1 or Sportsnet One | 10 Mbps | 3 GB | 13 Mbps or more |
| A 4K broadcast of a big event | 25 Mbps | 7 to 10 GB | About 33 Mbps or more |
The last column adds about 30% spare for phones, laptops and updates, as we suggest for every home. Add another stream’s worth for each extra TV playing at the same time.
To check what the TV actually gets, open the network status screen. On a Samsung it’s under Settings > General (or Connection) > Network > Network Status, which confirms the TV reaches the internet. On an LG, open Settings > All Settings > General > Network and select your connection to see its status. Neither screen gives a reliable speed figure, so hold your phone right next to the TV and run Speedtest there in the evening, when everyone is home. If the phone gets 60 Mbps in the kitchen and 12 Mbps beside the TV, the TV’s spot is the problem, not your plan.
Condo towers are the classic case. A TV on a wall shared with a neighbour, in a building where dozens of routers fight over the same channels, can drop to a fraction of what the plan delivers. A cable from the router or a mesh pod in the same room is a better fix than a faster plan from Bell, Rogers, Telus or Vidéotron. On Starlink or fixed wireless in rural areas, keep the TV on HD channels; 4K needs a steady 25 Mbps, and short dropouts hit 4K first.
One more Canadian detail: switching the TV’s menu language to French changes the TV’s menus, not the channels. French channels such as RDS, TVA, Noovo and ICI Radio-Canada Télé are separate channels in your list, and the player app has its own language setting.
Picture but no sound, or the wrong language?
It’s almost always the audio track. Films and some channels carry more than one: English, French, sometimes a separate Dolby track. TVs can’t decode every audio format, so the player shows the picture and stays silent when it lands on one the TV can’t play.
- Open the player’s options during playback. In most TV players that’s the OK button or an on-screen menu icon.
- Choose another audio track. Pick a stereo or AAC track if one is offered, or the French track if that’s what you want.
- Set the TV’s audio output to PCM and play the same film or channel again.
- Restart the app if the sound still doesn’t come back.

What if your TV’s store has none of these players?
Plug in a streaming device. On an older TV it’s often cheaper and faster than paying activation fees for an app that will run slowly anyway, and it gives you better players.
| Device | Players you can use | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Fire TV Stick with Fire OS | TiviMate, IPTV Smarters and others | The Vega OS sticks (4K Select, the 2026 HD and the 2026 4K) can’t install TiviMate. See how to set up TiviMate on a Fire TV Stick. |
| Google TV or Android TV device | TiviMate from Google Play, and others | Check storage on the cheapest models |
| Apple TV 4K | IPTVX, UHF, Smarters Player Lite and others | Most are free downloads with in-app purchases. Our post on IPTV on Apple TV without stuttering covers the settings. |
| MAG or Formuler box | Built-in portal or app | Needs its own remote and HDMI port; our IPTV box guide covers setup |
A stick also solves the Wi-Fi problem from the section above if you add an Ethernet adapter, and you can move it to another TV in minutes.
How do you avoid fake player apps and activation scams?
Check the developer name, pay only on the app’s official site, and never give your login to anyone who isn’t your provider. These five habits cover nearly every problem we hear about:
- Match the developer, not the icon. Copies borrow colours and names. Read the developer line in the store.
- Don’t install an activation app until your login is ready. The trial runs from first launch, and wasting it on an empty app is common.
- Never send your IPTV login to a player’s “support”. The player’s team has no reason to see it.
- Be wary of players that arrive with channels already loaded. A real player is an empty shell until you add your own service.
- Keep receipts for activation fees. Without one, a TV reset can mean paying twice.
The player is a tool, and so is IPTV itself. IPTV as a technology is legal in Canada. Whether a given stream is legal depends on whether the channel owner licensed it. IPTV Rich does not host content, and viewers are responsible for what they watch where they live. Our checklist on how to tell if an IPTV provider is safe covers the service side.
When is a smart TV app the wrong choice?
A TV app is fine for one TV and simple live viewing. It’s the wrong choice in these cases:
- You have three or more TVs. Paying an activation fee for each one adds up, and a free login app or a stick per TV costs less over time.
- You flip channels constantly during games. TV apps usually switch channels more slowly than a good stick does.
- Your TV is old and the menus already lag. A player won’t run faster than the TV’s own menus.
- You want recording to a drive. TV apps rarely offer it. Android players on a stick do it better.
- You only watch Netflix, Crave or YouTube. You don’t need a player at all.
If a smart TV app does suit you, the last step is the service itself. Our best IPTV Canada service sends a standard Xtream Codes login that works in the free login apps above, and every IPTV subscription is a one-time Interac payment in CAD: 12 months on 1 device is $77, with nothing renewing automatically. Not sure the app will run on your model? Test it during a 24-hour free trial before you pay anyone, including us.
Questions people ask
Can I install TiviMate on a Samsung or LG TV?
No. TiviMate is built for Android TV, and Samsung’s Tizen and LG’s webOS can’t run Android apps. Plug a Fire OS stick or a Google TV device into the TV if you want TiviMate.
Is IPTV Smarters free on Samsung TVs?
Yes. Samsung’s app catalogue lists IPTV Smarters from WHMCS Smarters as a free app. Check the developer name before installing, because several apps use similar names.
Do I pay IBO Player again for a second TV?
Yes. Activation is tied to each TV’s MAC address and device key, so every TV is a separate activation on the official site.
Why did my IPTV app disappear from the Samsung or LG store?
Samsung and LG change their store listings by region and model, and some players have been removed over the years. Search for a current app from a known developer, or switch to a plug-in stick.
Does the player app change picture quality?
Not much. Quality comes from the stream, your internet speed and the TV’s decoder. A good player helps with smooth playback and a faster guide, but it can’t turn an HD channel into 4K.
