Short answer: Install the Smarters app for your device, choose Login with Xtream Codes API, then type any name, your username, your password and the server URL exactly as sent, starting with http:// and ending with the port number. Tap Add User and wait for the lists to load. Most failed logins come down to one wrong character in the URL.
What do you need before you open Smarters?
You need three pieces of login information from your provider: a username, a password and a server URL. Smarters calls this an “Xtream Codes” login. Every IPTV Canada plan we sell comes with these three details, sent by email and in the live chat once your Interac e-Transfer is matched to your order.
Have the details open on your phone or laptop before you start. You’ll be copying them by hand onto a TV keyboard, and it’s much easier to compare character by character when both screens are in front of you.
| What you receive | Field name in Smarters | What it looks like | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| A label you pick | Any Name | Living room | Nothing. It’s only a name for the profile. |
| Username | Username | A mix of letters and numbers | Capital letters matter. Abc123 is not abc123. |
| Password | Password | A mix of letters and numbers | Same as above. No spaces before or after. |
| Server URL | http://url_here.com:port | http://server.example:8080 | Must include http:// and the port number after the colon, if one was sent. |
If you don’t have login details yet, ask for the 24-hour free trial in live chat. You get a working username, password and URL, which is the best way to test Smarters on your own TV before you pay anything.
You also need a device that can run Smarters, a connection that can handle the quality you plan to watch (5 Mbps for one HD stream, 10 Mbps for Full HD, 25 Mbps for 4K), and about ten minutes. Typing the URL is the slow part.
Which Smarters app should you install on your device?
It depends on the device, and the store picture in Canada has changed. When we checked in October 2026, the old IPTV Smarters Pro listing on Google Play returned “not found” for Canada. On Apple’s Canadian App Store, the developer’s app is called Smarters Player Lite. It’s free with in-app purchases and runs on iPhone, iPad and Apple TV.
Search “Smarters” in any store and you’ll find a long row of look-alikes from other developers, with names like Smarters Pro, Smarters IPTV Pro and IPTV Smarters Player Expert. They aren’t the same app, and their screens won’t match this guide. The original Smarters apps are published by WHMCS SMARTERS. Check the developer name under the app title before you tap Get or Install.
| Device | Where Smarters comes from | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Fire TV Stick 4K Max, Fire TV Stick 4K (earlier models), Fire TV Cube | The developer’s website, installed with the Downloader app | These run Fire OS, which is Android-based, so the app file installs. |
| Fire TV Stick 4K Select and other Vega OS models | Not installable | Vega OS is Linux-based and doesn’t run Android app files. Use an app from the Amazon Appstore instead, or a different stick. |
| Android TV and Google TV boxes (Chromecast with Google TV, Google TV Streamer, Nvidia Shield, Formuler) | The developer’s website, installed with a file manager or Downloader | Allow “unknown sources” for the app you install from. |
| Android phone or tablet | The developer’s website, through your browser | Android asks you to allow installs from that browser once. |
| iPhone, iPad, Apple TV | App Store: Smarters Player Lite by WHMCS SMARTERS | Login options can differ from the Android version. |
| Samsung and LG smart TVs | Varies by model year and region | Smarters builds have come and gone from these stores. IBO Player is the simpler route on a TV. |
Not sure which Fire TV you have? Go to Settings > My Fire TV > About. Amazon’s page on checking your Fire TV software version lists which models run Fire OS and which run Vega OS. If yours says Vega OS, stop here: Smarters won’t install, and no setting changes that.
One more thing before you install anything. Smarters is only a player. It has no channels of its own, it shows whatever playlist you log in with. IPTV as a technology is legal in Canada. Whether a given stream is legal depends on whether the channel owner licensed it. IPTV Rich does not host content, and viewers are responsible for what they watch where they live.
How do you install Smarters on a Fire TV Stick?
On a Fire OS stick you install Smarters with the free Downloader app, after allowing Downloader to install apps. The whole thing takes about five minutes.
- Confirm your stick runs Fire OS. Open Settings > My Fire TV > About. If you see Fire OS, carry on. If you see Vega OS, Smarters can’t be installed on this stick.
- Install Downloader. Use the search icon on the Fire TV home screen, type
Downloader, and install the orange app by AFTVnews from the Amazon Appstore. - Turn on Developer Options. Go to Settings > My Fire TV > About and press the select button on your stick’s name seven times in a row. A message says you’re now a developer. Press Back once and Developer Options appears in the My Fire TV menu.
- Let Downloader install apps. Open Settings > My Fire TV > Developer Options > Install unknown apps, and switch Downloader to ON. On older Fire OS versions this setting is called “Apps from Unknown Sources”.
- Open Downloader and enter the download address. Type the address of the Smarters download page from the developer’s own website. Download links change from time to time, so we don’t print one here. If you’re stuck, ask us in live chat and we’ll walk you through it.
- Install and clean up. When the file finishes, choose Install, then Done. Downloader offers to delete the installation file. Say yes. It frees storage, and free storage matters on a stick that already holds a dozen apps.
- Put Smarters on the home row. Hold the Home button, choose Apps, highlight Smarters, press the menu button (three lines) and choose Move to front.
If you’d rather not sideload at all, TiviMate is a good alternative on Fire TV and uses the same login details. Our TiviMate setup on a Fire TV Stick covers it step by step, and the Firestick setup guide covers the stick itself.
How do you install it on Android TV, phones, iPhone and Apple TV?
On Android devices you install the app file from the developer’s site. On Apple devices you install Smarters Player Lite from the App Store. Here’s what changes for each.
Android TV and Google TV boxes
Google TV hides app installs from outside the store behind one switch. Install a file manager or Downloader from Google Play first, then open Settings > Apps > Security & restrictions > Unknown sources and turn it on for that app only. Older Android TV boxes put the same switch under Settings > Device Preferences > Security & restrictions. Download the Smarters file from the developer’s website, open it, and choose Install.
Boxes like the Formuler Z-series and BuzzTV ship their own players as well. If you already use MyTVOnline on a Formuler, you don’t need Smarters at all; the built-in player takes the same login.
Android phones and tablets
Open the developer’s site in Chrome or Samsung Internet, download the app file, and tap it in the notification. Android asks whether that browser may install apps. Allow it once, install, and then switch it back off in Settings > Apps > Special app access > Install unknown apps. Menu names shift a little between Samsung, Google Pixel and Motorola phones, but the setting is always under Apps or Security.
iPhone, iPad and Apple TV
Search “Smarters Player Lite” in the App Store and check that the developer is WHMCS SMARTERS. On Apple TV, open the App Store on the Apple TV itself. Its login screen may not show every option the Android version shows. If you don’t see an Xtream Codes option, ask us in live chat for the M3U playlist version of your login and use the playlist option instead.
Apple TV has its own playback quirks, especially with frame rates. If the picture judders after you log in, read our guide to streaming IPTV on Apple TV without stuttering.
How do you log in with Xtream Codes API, field by field?
You add a user profile, pick the Xtream Codes option, and fill in four fields. Smarters checks the details with the server, then downloads the lists of live channels, movies and series.
- Open Smarters and accept the terms. The first launch shows a terms screen. Some builds also ask what kind of device this is, phone or TV. Pick the one in your hand; it changes the layout, not your login.
- Choose Add User, then Login with Xtream Codes API. If the app opens on a List Users screen, use the plus or Add User button first.
- Fill in Any Name. Type a label like
Basement TVorRich. It only matters if you keep more than one login in the app. - Fill in Username. Type it exactly as sent. If your phone or TV keyboard capitalizes the first letter on its own, go back and fix it.
- Fill in Password. Same care. Most keyboards hide the password as you type, so type slowly and use the show-password eye icon if your build has one.
- Fill in the URL. Type
http://, then the server address, then a colon, then the port, for examplehttp://server.example:8080. No spaces, no slash at the end. - Tap Add User. Smarters checks the login. When the home dashboard with Live TV, Movies and Series appears, it worked.
- Wait for the first load. The first time, Smarters downloads the whole channel list and the movie and series libraries. On a Fire TV Stick this can take a minute or two. Don’t press Back while the progress bar runs.
The URL field causes most failed logins. This table shows what a right and wrong entry look like, using a made-up server name.
| What you typed | Works? | Why |
|---|---|---|
http://server.example:8080 | Yes | Protocol, address and port, nothing extra. |
server.example:8080 | No | Missing http://. Some builds add it for you, most don’t. |
http://server.example | No, if a port was sent | Without the port, the app knocks on the wrong door. |
https://server.example:8080 | No, if you were sent http:// | One letter changes the connection type. Copy what was sent. |
http://server.example:8080/ | Usually | A trailing slash works on most builds, but leave it off to be safe. |
http://server.example:8080 (space at the end) | No | Copy-paste on phones often adds a space. Delete it. |
A long link with get.php?username= in it | Not here | That’s an M3U playlist link. It goes in the playlist option, not the Xtream URL field. |
When should you use the M3U playlist option instead?
Use M3U only when the Xtream Codes option is missing or won’t work on your build. Xtream Codes is the better choice in Smarters whenever it’s available, because the app talks to the server directly instead of reading one giant file.
| Feature in Smarters | Xtream Codes API login | M3U playlist (Load Your Playlist or File/URL) |
|---|---|---|
| Live, Movies and Series split into sections | Yes, automatically | Often lumped together or split less cleanly |
| TV guide (EPG) | Loads from the server | May need a separate guide address |
| Catch-up on supported channels | Shown where the channel has it | Often missing |
| Account screen with expiry date and connections | Yes | No |
| Load speed on a low-memory stick | Faster, loads section by section | Slower, reads the whole list in one go |
| Typing on a TV remote | Three short fields | One very long link |
The long M3U link is miserable to type with a remote. If you have to use it, send it to yourself and paste it on a phone or tablet, or ask in live chat for help moving it onto the device.
Which Smarters settings should you change after the first login?
Four settings make the biggest difference: the guide, the player, the stream format and parental control. Open Settings from the dashboard (the gear icon). Labels move a little between versions, but these sections have been in Smarters for years.
| Setting | What to pick first | Change it when |
|---|---|---|
| EPG / Install EPG | Load or refresh the guide once after login | The guide is blank or shows yesterday’s shows |
| Time Format | 12-hour if you read times as 7:30 p.m. | You prefer 24-hour, common in Quebec |
| Player Selection | The built-in player for every section | A channel plays black or silent; try VLC as an external player for Live |
| Stream Format | Default | Try HLS if live channels stutter, MPEGTS if switching channels is slow |
| Parental Control | Set a PIN, then lock adult and other groups you don’t want shown | Kids use the same TV |
| Automation | Refresh channels and guide when the app starts | Startup feels slow on an older stick; switch it off and refresh by hand |
Get the guide times right for your time zone
Smarters shows guide times in your device’s time zone. If shows are listed an hour or more off, fix the clock on the device first, not the app. Canada has six time zones, and two catch people out. Newfoundland runs half an hour ahead of Atlantic time, and most of Saskatchewan doesn’t change clocks in spring and fall. A Regina viewer whose box is set to “Central” with daylight time will see the guide drift by an hour for half the year. Pick the city-based zone (Regina, St. John’s) in the device’s date and time settings. If times are still off, look for an EPG time-shift option in Smarters and move it by whole hours.
Guide problems that remain after that usually sit with the guide data itself. Our post on fixing an EPG that won’t update goes through them in order.
Player Selection and Stream Format, in plain words
The built-in player handles most channels. When one channel shows a black screen with sound, or sound with no picture, the quickest test is to switch Live to an external player like VLC (install it first, then add it under External Players) and play the same channel. If it works there, the built-in player is struggling with that channel’s video or audio format. Our guide to the IPTV black screen and no-sound fixes explains why.
Stream Format changes how the app asks the server for live video. MPEGTS is a steady flow; HLS comes in short chunks. On a solid wired connection both work. On busy Wi-Fi, HLS sometimes rides out short drops better. Change one thing at a time and test the same channel for a few minutes, or you won’t know which change helped.

Ask for it in live chat: enter your number, tap "Free trial", and your trial login arrives in the conversation.
Why won’t IPTV Smarters Pro log in?
Almost always a typo, an expired line, or a second device already using the connection. Work down this table from the top. The exact wording of messages differs by version, so match on the meaning.
| What you see | Most likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| “Invalid credentials” or “Authentication failed” | Username or password typo, often an auto-capitalized first letter | Edit the user and retype both fields slowly. Check capitals. |
| “Unable to connect”, “Server not responding” or a timeout | URL or port wrong, or the address isn’t reaching the server | Compare the URL to the table above. Then try the same login on your phone using mobile data. |
| Login works on mobile data but not on home Wi-Fi | Your home network’s DNS or router | Restart the router. If that doesn’t help, change the DNS on the device. |
| “Your account is expired” | The plan or trial ended | Check the expiry date on the account screen. Nothing renews by itself, so a renewal is a new order. |
| Logs in, but a channel won’t start while someone else is watching | The plan’s connection limit is in use | Stop the stream on the other device, or move to a plan with more devices. |
| Stuck on “Loading” or the progress bar never finishes | Low memory or storage on the device | Restart the device, clear the Smarters cache, free storage, try again. |
| Logs in, but some sections are empty | Parental control is hiding groups, or the package doesn’t include them | Check Parental Control. The English-only package doesn’t carry French and international groups. |
| Worked yesterday, fails today on one device only | Wrong date and time on that device | Set the device clock to automatic. A wrong date breaks secure connections. |
If the app shows a number such as 401, 403 or 509, that number tells you more than the text. Our list of IPTV error codes and what they mean covers each one. If a DNS change is next, our comparison of the best DNS for streaming in Canada lists the settings to type.
Before you change anything else, check the line itself. Run a test at Speedtest on the same device or on a phone on the same Wi-Fi. A Bell Fibe or Rogers Ignite line that tests well on a phone in the kitchen can still be weak at a basement TV two floors down.
Logged in but nothing plays?
That’s a different problem from a failed login. If the lists load but channels spin forever, test three channels from three different groups, say CBC from the Canadian group, a US network and a UK channel. If all three fail, it’s the connection or the account. If only one fails, it’s that channel, and live chat is the fastest route. Tell us the channel name, the time you tried in Eastern time, your device and that you were using Smarters.
Can you use the same Smarters login on several devices?
Yes, you can install Smarters and add the same login on as many devices as you like. What’s limited is how many play at the same time. On our plans, 1 device on the plan means 1 stream playing at once. A 2-device plan lets two screens play together, and a 3-device plan lets three.
So a household with Smarters on the living room Fire TV, a bedroom Android box and two phones can share a 1-device plan, as long as only one of them is playing. The moment a second one starts a channel, one of them will fail to play. Most Smarters builds have an account screen (look for your username or a person icon on the dashboard) showing the expiry date, active connections and maximum connections. It’s the quickest way to see whether a forgotten device is still holding the stream.
Closing the app properly matters. A stick left playing on a TV that someone switched off with the TV remote is still streaming. If you often have two screens on during the same game, compare the 2- and 3-device totals on our IPTV subscription plans page, and read our guide to running IPTV on several TVs in one home.
How do you edit, switch or remove a login in Smarters?
Use the List Users screen. It’s where Smarters keeps every profile you’ve added, and it’s the first screen you’ll see if you have more than one.
- To fix a typo: on List Users, highlight the profile, open its menu (long-press on a phone, the menu button on a remote), and choose Edit. Correct the field and save. Don’t add a second profile with the right details and leave the broken one behind; it causes confusion later.
- To switch between logins: log out from the dashboard (the exit or power icon), then pick another profile. A family might keep a trial profile and a paid profile side by side for a day while comparing.
- To remove a login: open the profile’s menu and choose Delete. Do this when you sell or give away a device.
- When your details change: if a renewal or a move to a bigger plan comes with a new username or password, edit the existing profile with the new details.
- When nothing else works: clear the app’s cache (Android: Settings > Apps > Smarters > Clear cache), then log in again. A full reinstall is the last step, not the first.
Does Smarters behave differently on a phone and a TV?
Yes, the layout and a few features differ. The phone version is built around touch: a dashboard of large tiles, swipe-down menus, and casting where your build supports it. The TV version is built around a remote, with bigger focus highlights and a guide view you move through with the arrow keys.
| Task | On a phone | On a TV with a remote |
|---|---|---|
| Typing the login | Easy, paste from your email | Slow; use the Fire TV phone app keyboard or type carefully |
| Finding a channel | Search icon at the top of Live TV | Search in the Live TV section, or browse groups with the arrow keys |
| Changing audio track | Tap the screen, then the audio icon | Press the menu or OK button during playback for track options |
| Data use | Counts against your mobile plan off Wi-Fi: about 1.5–2 GB an hour in HD | Counts against your home internet only |
| Best use | Watching in the backyard, checking a score during dinner | The main screen for games and evening TV |
The data line is worth a second look. A three-hour hockey game in HD on a phone away from Wi-Fi can use 4.5 to 6 GB. On a Canadian mobile plan with a 50 GB monthly allowance, that adds up fast over a playoff run. Drop to SD on the go (about 0.7 GB an hour) if your build lets you pick a lower quality channel.
When is Smarters Pro the wrong app for you?
Smarters is a good all-rounder, but it isn’t the best pick on every screen. Here’s when we’d point you elsewhere.
- Your Fire TV runs Vega OS. Smarters can’t install there. Pick a player available in the Amazon Appstore for that stick, or use a Fire OS stick.
- You live in the TV guide. If you channel-surf from a grid like you did with Bell or Rogers cable boxes, TiviMate’s guide feels closer to cable. Our free vs paid IPTV players comparison explains what the paid version adds.
- You’re on a Samsung or LG TV with no stick. IBO Player is easier to set up on the TV itself. See the IBO Player setup guide.
- Your device is old and slow. A box with very little memory struggles to load large libraries in any app. A newer stick costs less than a few months of frustration.
- You only watch one or two streaming services. If your evenings are Netflix and Crave, you don’t need an IPTV app at all.
For help with the setup itself, the live chat on our support page is staffed every day from 9 a.m. to midnight Eastern. Messages sent overnight get an answer in the morning.
Questions people ask
Is IPTV Smarters Pro free?
The app itself is free to install; the Apple version, Smarters Player Lite, offers in-app purchases for extra features. Smarters has no channels of its own, so you still need a subscription login to watch anything.
What is the Xtream Codes API in Smarters?
It’s the login method that uses a username, password and server URL instead of a long playlist link. It loads live TV, movies and series into separate sections and shows your account’s expiry date.
Why does Smarters say my URL is invalid?
The URL is usually missing http:// at the start or the port number at the end, or a space slipped in during copy-paste. Type it exactly as sent, for example http://server.example:8080.
Can I install IPTV Smarters Pro on a Fire TV Stick 4K Select?
No. The Fire TV Stick 4K Select runs Vega OS, which doesn’t install Android app files. Fire OS models such as the Fire TV Stick 4K Max can still run it.
Can I use the same login in Smarters and TiviMate?
Yes. The same username, password and URL work in both, and in IBO Player too. Only the number of streams playing at once is limited by your plan.
