Short answer: On Windows or Mac, the fastest way to watch is VLC: choose Media > Open Network Stream (File > Open Network on a Mac), paste the M3U link we send you and press Play. VLC has no TV guide, so for everyday viewing use Kodi with the PVR IPTV Simple Client, or a desktop player that accepts an Xtream Codes login.
Which IPTV player should you use on a computer?
| Player | Runs on | Login it takes | TV guide | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| VLC | Windows, macOS, Linux, Chrome OS | M3U link | No | A quick test, or the odd game on a laptop |
| Kodi with PVR IPTV Simple Client | Windows, macOS, Linux | M3U link plus a guide (XMLTV) link | Yes | A PC or Mac mini plugged into the TV |
| Desktop IPTV players | Windows, macOS (varies by app) | Xtream Codes login, M3U | Usually | Everyday viewing at a desk |
| Browser web players | Any browser | Varies | Varies | Last resort, when you can’t install software |
All are free except some desktop players, which charge the app maker’s own price.
What do you need before you start?
- A Windows PC or Mac with its latest updates. A Windows 10 PC still plays IPTV, but Microsoft ended regular support for Windows 10 in October 2025, so keep its browser and players up to date.
- Your M3U link (for VLC and Kodi) or your username, password and server URL (for Xtream players). Ask in chat if you need the TV guide link for Kodi.
- About 5 Mbps per HD stream, 10 Mbps for Full HD or 25 Mbps for 4K, measured where the computer sits.
How do you open IPTV in VLC on Windows?
- Download VLC from the official site. Get it from videolan.org, not a look-alike download site that bundles extra software.
- Install and open VLC. Accept the defaults.
- Open a network stream. Choose Media > Open Network Stream, or press Ctrl+N.
- Paste your M3U link and press Play. Paste the whole link in one go. The first channel starts after a few seconds.
- Show the channel list. Choose View > Playlist, or press Ctrl+L. Use the search box to find a channel like CP24 or TSN 1.
How do you open IPTV in VLC on a Mac?
- Download VLC for macOS. Get it from videolan.org and drag it to Applications.
- Open it the first time. macOS may ask you to confirm opening an app downloaded from the internet. Choose Open.
- Open a network stream. Choose File > Open Network, or press Command+N.
- Paste your M3U link and open it. The first channel starts after a few seconds.
- Show the channel list. Choose Window > Playlist and search for the channel you want.
VLC loads the whole list at once, so a very large list can take a while. The English-only package, chosen at checkout, gives a shorter list.
How do you add a TV guide with Kodi?
Kodi is a free media centre for Windows and Mac. With the PVR IPTV Simple Client add-on, it shows your channels in a TV-style guide. Download it from the official Kodi website.
- Install the add-on. In Kodi, go to Settings (the gear) > Add-ons > Install from repository > PVR clients > PVR IPTV Simple Client, then Install.
- Add your playlist. Open the add-on’s Configure screen. Under General, set Location to Remote path (Internet address) and paste your M3U link.
- Add the guide. Under EPG settings, paste the TV guide (XMLTV) link we send you.
- Restart Kodi. Close and reopen it. Channels load under TV in the main menu, and the Guide view fills in.
Menu wording can change slightly between Kodi versions. If Configure looks different, look for the same two fields: playlist URL and EPG URL.
Is there a desktop player that takes an Xtream Codes login?
Yes. Several desktop IPTV players accept a username, password and server URL and show a full guide, including desktop versions of Smarters-style apps and the open-source IPTVnator. On a Mac, some App Store IPTV players also have Mac versions, and on Macs with Apple silicon, some iPhone and iPad apps install from the Mac App Store too. Apps change, so check that the one you pick is still updated.
- Download from the official source only. Use the maker’s website, the Microsoft Store or the Mac App Store. Never install “cracked” versions.
- Choose the Xtream login. Pick Xtream Codes (or XC) when adding a playlist.
- Paste your details. Server URL, username and password, exactly as sent.
- Wait for the first load. Then add favourites.
Free 24-hour trial
Ask for it in live chat: enter your number, tap "Free trial", and your trial login arrives in the conversation.
Can you watch IPTV in a web browser?
Sometimes, but it’s the weakest option. Many live streams don’t play in a browser tab without a player app, background tabs get slowed down, and you can’t choose the video decoder. Worse, copycat “free web player” sites ask for your login and keep it. Use a browser only if you can’t install anything, such as on a work computer, and only through a player’s official web version.
What are the best settings for IPTV on a computer?
| Setting | Value | Why |
|---|---|---|
| VLC network caching (Tools > Preferences > Show settings: All > Input / Codecs) | 3000 ms | Rides out short Wi-Fi drops; the default is lower. See buffer size settings. |
| VLC hardware-accelerated decoding (Tools > Preferences > Input / Codecs) | Automatic | Lower processor load and a cooler laptop. See hardware vs software decoding. |
| Windows power mode (Settings > System > Power & battery) | Best performance while plugged in | Battery saving can throttle Wi-Fi and the processor |
| Mac Low Power Mode (System Settings > Battery) | Off while watching | Same reason |
| VPN | Off for your first test | A VPN adds a detour; see VPN and IPTV in Canada |
On a Mac, VLC’s settings are under VLC > Settings (or Preferences); choose Show All to find network caching.
How do you stop IPTV buffering on a laptop over Wi-Fi?
- Plug in a cable. A USB or USB-C Ethernet adapter turns a buffering laptop into a steady one.
- Use the 5 GHz network and sit in the same room as the router if you can’t.
- Plug in the charger. On battery, laptops save power by slowing Wi-Fi and the processor.
- Pause cloud sync and updates. OneDrive, iCloud, Dropbox and Windows Update can fill your connection.
- Close other video tabs. A YouTube tab in the background still streams.
- Try another DNS if channels are slow to start: see the best DNS for streaming in Canada.

How do you put IPTV from your computer on the TV?
The simplest way is an HDMI cable from the computer to the TV. It carries picture and sound, adds no delay, and doesn’t touch your Wi-Fi.
- Windows: plug in the cable, press the Windows key and P together, and choose Duplicate or Second screen only. If the sound stays on the laptop, pick the TV as the output from the speaker icon in the taskbar.
- Mac: plug in the cable (recent MacBook Pro models have an HDMI port; a MacBook Air needs a USB-C to HDMI adapter). To go wireless to an Apple TV or AirPlay-compatible TV, use Screen Mirroring in Control Center, but expect a softer picture than with a cable.
Wireless mirroring sends the stream over your Wi-Fi a second time, the same drawback as casting from a phone. For a game you care about, use the cable.
What if IPTV won’t play on your computer?
VLC says your input can’t be opened
The link is incomplete, has a typo, or the trial has ended. Copy the M3U link again from your email in one piece and paste it.
Login errors in a desktop player
Re-enter the login by copy and paste; capitals matter. See IPTV error codes explained.
Buffering or freezing
Raise VLC’s network caching, move to a cable, then follow the IPTV buffering fixes.
Sound out of sync
In VLC, press J or K to move the sound slightly earlier or later. More in audio out of sync fixes.
Every other device is in the IPTV installation guide. Plans start at $17 for one month on one device: see IPTV subscription prices in CAD, or the IPTV Canada home page for the channel list.
Questions people ask
Is VLC free?
Yes. VLC is free, open-source software from VideoLAN, with no ads. Download it only from videolan.org.
Why doesn’t VLC show a TV guide?
VLC plays an M3U playlist as a plain list of channels and doesn’t read guide data. Use Kodi with the PVR IPTV Simple Client, or a desktop IPTV player, for a guide.
Does watching on my laptop count as a device?
Yes, while it’s playing. On a 1-device plan, the laptop and the TV can’t play at the same time; on a 2-device plan they can.
Can I play two channels at once on one computer?
Yes, by opening two VLC windows, but each channel is a separate stream. Two at once needs a 2-device plan or bigger.
Can I use a Chromebook?
Yes. VLC runs on Chrome OS, and most recent Chromebooks can install Android players from Google Play. Follow the Android phone and tablet steps.
