Short answer: Quebec’s main French channels are TVA, ICI Radio-Canada Télé, Noovo and Télé-Québec for general TV, LCN and RDI for news, and RDS, RDS 2 and TVA Sports for sports. In 2026–27, TVA Sports has the French national NHL package, including 32 Canadiens games, and RDS keeps 45 regional Canadiens games. With IPTV Rich, choose the Full channels package for French channels.

This guide is written in English for anglophones and bilingual households who watch French TV: an anglo family in the West Island that follows the Canadiens on RDS, a French immersion student in Ottawa, or a couple in Moncton who want TVA Nouvelles at supper. If you’d rather read in French, there’s a section near the end that points you to our French pages.

What are the main French-language channels in Quebec?

Nine channels cover most of what Quebec watches. Three companies own most of them: Québecor (through Groupe TVA), Bell Media and CBC/Radio-Canada, with Télé-Québec run as the province’s public educational broadcaster.

ChannelOwnerTypeWhat it’s known for
TVAGroupe TVA (Québecor)Private general networkBig variety and reality shows, Quebec dramas, TVA Nouvelles

RDSBell MediaSportsRegional Canadiens and Senators games, the CFL including the Alouettes
RDS 2Bell MediaSportsExtra events when RDS is busy
TVA SportsQuébecorSportsThe French national NHL package and its playoff coverage

The ownership matters more than you’d think. Québecor and Bell compete hard in Quebec, so you’ll often find a story or a game on one company’s channels and not the other’s. The Canadiens are the clearest case this season: their French broadcasts are split between Québecor’s TVA Sports and Bell’s RDS.

Who has the Canadiens in French in 2026–27?

TVA Sports has 32 Canadiens regular-season games plus every Canadiens playoff game, RDS has 45 regional games, and Prime Video streams 7 Wednesday games in French. That’s all 84 games of the new, longer schedule.

RDS45 (regional)None; playoff games are nationalRDS’s streaming service, inside the regional territory
Prime Video7 (Wednesday nights, French broadcast)Two first-round series and one second-round seriesA Prime membership

TVA Sports’ deal with Rogers was announced September 3, 2026, and runs 12 years. It covers up to 350 regular-season games a season and 10 more Canadiens games than the old agreement. The NHL’s note on the Rogers and Québecor French-language deal lists every piece.

RDS lost some ground: its regional share drops from 60 games to 45 as Bell Media renewed the Canadiens’ regional rights. In English, the same regional games are on TSN 2, about 50 a season, and national games are on Sportsnet or Prime Video. Our guide to watching the 2026–27 NHL season in Canada covers the English side and every other Canadian team.

Senators fans who watch in French get regional games on RDS and national games on TVA Sports. Bell Media renewed the Senators’ regional deal in April 2026, so the English regional games stay on TSN 5.

Where are other sports shown in French?

RDS is the French home of the CFL, TVA Sports carries the NHL’s French national package, and the other leagues move between RDS, TVA Sports and streaming services from season to season. Check the guide on the day rather than relying on last year’s channel.

Who watches French TV in Canada?

Mostly Quebecers, but not only them. Statistics Canada’s 2021 Census found that 77.5% of Quebecers mainly speak French at home, about 6.5 million people, down from 79.0% in 2016. Outside Quebec, more than 900,000 people had French as their only first official language.

2021 Census figureValue
Quebecers who mainly speak French at home77.5% (about 6.5 million)
Quebecers who can speak both English and French46.4%
Canadians who can speak both English and French18.0%
Quebecers whose first official language is English13.0% (more than 1 million)
People outside Quebec with French as their only first official languageMore than 900,000

Those numbers, from Statistics Canada’s 2021 Census language release, describe the audience for this guide. Almost half of Quebec is bilingual, and more than a million Quebecers have English as their first official language. Plenty of households switch between TSN and RDS, or CTV and TVA, depending on who’s holding the remote.

Outside Quebec, French TV is the daily connection for Acadians in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, Franco-Ontarians in Ottawa, Sudbury and the northeast, Franco-Manitobans in Saint-Boniface, and smaller communities in the West. It’s also a study tool for French immersion students, whose parents often want Télé-Québec’s children’s shows and Radio-Canada on the family TV.

What time do Quebec broadcasts air in francophone communities elsewhere?

French broadcasts are scheduled in Eastern time, so a 7 p.m. game on TVA Sports starts at 8 p.m. in Acadie, 6 p.m. in Saint-Boniface and 4 p.m. in Vancouver. Two corners of Quebec itself aren’t on Eastern time either.

CommunityTime zoneA 7 p.m. Eastern game starts at

Edmonton, Calgary, Saint-Paul (Alta.)Mountain5:00 p.m.
Vancouver, Victoria (B.C.)Pacific4:00 p.m.

For viewers in the West, catch-up matters more than speed. A 7 p.m. Eastern newscast is over before a lot of people in Calgary get home from work. On supported channels, catch-up lets you go back to a show that has already aired, so Le Téléjournal can wait until after supper in Edmonton.

How do I watch French TV without cable through official services?

An antenna and two free apps cover a lot of French TV. The general networks broadcast over the air in Montreal, Quebec City and other larger centres, Radio-Canada’s ICI TOU.TV has a free tier with ads, and Noovo puts its shows online for free. Sports and news channels are where it gets expensive.

ICI TOU.TVRadio-Canada series and shows on demand, plus programming from other French channelsFree with ads; a paid ad-free tier

Prices for these services change often, so check the official sites before you subscribe. Add them up for your own household: a Canadiens fan who wants every game in French needs TVA Sports Direct, RDS and Prime Video, before any news channel or series.

Lineups change, and we don’t promise a particular game, show or event. If one channel or one game matters to you, ask the desk in live chat before you pay, or check it yourself during the 24-hour free trial. On the legal side: IPTV as a technology is legal in Canada. Whether a given stream is legal depends on whether the channel owner licensed it. IPTV Rich does not host content, and viewers are responsible for what they watch where they live. Our page on whether IPTV is legal in Canada explains how that works.

How do I set up a French channel list on my TV?

Build a favourites group with your French channels, hide the country groups you never open, and set the audio and caption options once. These steps work in TiviMate, IPTV Smarters Pro, IBO Player and most similar apps, with small differences in menu names.

  1. Pick Full channels when you order. The French channels come with that package, not with English channels only.
  2. Load your login in the player app. Enter the server address, username and password from your activation email, or the playlist link.
  3. Find the Canadian French channels. Search for “TVA” or “RDS” rather than scrolling. Most players have a search icon in the channel list.
  4. Create a “Québec” favourites group. Add TVA, ICI Radio-Canada Télé, Noovo, Télé-Québec, LCN, RDI, RDS, RDS 2 and TVA Sports. Put the ones you watch most at the top.
  5. Hide what you don’t watch. Most players let you hide whole groups. Hiding dozens of countries you’ll never open makes the list faster to browse on a remote.
  6. Switch the app to French if you like. Many players can display their menus in French; look under the app’s general or language settings.
  7. Check the audio track. During playback, open the audio menu. Some channels carry more than one track, such as described video for viewers with low vision.
  8. Turn on captions if you need them. French closed captions (sous-titres codés) appear only when the channel sends them, so try another program if one doesn’t have them.
  9. Refresh the guide. If the EPG is empty for a French channel, update the guide in the app’s settings, then restart the app.

If a French channel freezes during a Canadiens game but other channels are fine, the cause is usually the network rather than the app. Our guide to fixing stream interruptions during NHL games in Ontario and Quebec covers the evening congestion that hits Montreal and Quebec City on game nights.

What should I test during the free trial if I watch in French?

Test the channels you’ll actually watch, at the hours you’ll actually watch them. The trial lasts 24 hours, so ask for it in live chat on the morning of a day when the Canadiens play, and you’ll cover a news morning, a supper-hour newscast and a game night in one go.

TestWhenWhat good looks like
TVA Sports or RDS during a Canadiens gameGame night, from the pre-game showA steady picture through the first period, with no drop to blurry quality on fast plays
LCN or RDIMorning and supper hourThe channel starts within a few seconds and the guide shows the current show
TVA, ICI Radio-Canada Télé and NoovoPrime timeProgramme titles in the guide match what’s on screen
Catch-upThe next morningYou can go back to last night’s show on a supported channel
Captions and audioAny timeThe audio menu opens, and captions appear on programs that send them
A second TVOnly if you plan to buy 2 devicesAsk the desk which trial setup lets you test two screens

Write down anything that fails, with the channel name and the time, and send it to the desk before the trial ends. A note like “RDS froze at 8:10 p.m. on the Fire TV in the basement” gets a much faster answer than “it doesn’t work”.

What works best in a bilingual household?

Keep both languages in one favourites list and decide game by game, because the English and French broadcasts of the same game are often on different networks. A Saturday Canadiens game might be on Sportsnet in English and TVA Sports in French; a regional game is on TSN 2 in English and RDS in French; a Wednesday game is on Prime Video in either language.

The trouble starts when two people want two different things at once: the game in French in the living room and a series in English in the bedroom. That’s two streams playing at the same time, and with IPTV Rich, 1 device on the plan means 1 stream at a time. One month on 2 devices is $28, and 12 months on 2 devices is $128. Every option is on the IPTV subscription page.

French immersion families outside Quebec often use French TV as homework help. Télé-Québec’s children’s programming and Radio-Canada’s shows give kids hours of natural Quebec French, and captions in French help them follow along. Put those channels in a separate kids’ favourites group so they don’t land on a 24-hour news channel by accident.

Some bilingual homes also watch in languages beyond English and French. If that’s your house, our guide to international channels for Canada’s communities covers the Full channels package from that angle.

When is IPTV not the right choice for French TV?

If you only watch the four big French networks and live within antenna range, you probably don’t need a subscription at all. Here’s when we’d point you elsewhere.

  • You watch TVA, Radio-Canada, Noovo and Télé-Québec, and nothing else. An antenna in Montreal or Quebec City, plus ICI TOU.TV’s free tier and Noovo’s free app, covers most of that for nothing.
  • You only want one sports channel. If all you watch is TVA Sports for the Canadiens’ national games, TVA Sports Direct on its own may be simpler.
  • Your home is English-only. Choose the English channels only package, or skip the French channels altogether.
  • Your internet is under 5 Mbps. That’s common in parts of Abitibi, the Côte-Nord and the Gaspésie. HD needs about 5 Mbps per stream; below that, the picture will keep stopping.
  • You want every stream to come straight from the rights holder. TVA Sports, RDS and the networks’ own apps are the official sources, and that’s a fair reason to use them.

If you do go the IPTV route, our IPTV Rich home page has a cost calculator that sets a year of cable against a year of IPTV, with the Canadian prices in dollars.
